We have been busy over the winter setting up a new
wildlife area on the site and thought we would give you an early view…
We are sure that younger visitors to Southfork will
love exploring the area and looking for creepy crawlies.
We have so far set up a bug hotel, Log
piles, wildlife pond and bird feeders. We
will be adding a hedgehog house to the area soon as well as adding bird boxes
in various places around the park. We
are also planning to clear the banks in between the two fields to plant wild
flowers.
Southfork is one of 579 camping and caravanning parks
in the UK to be awarded a David Bellamy Conservation Award. Parks are assessed by the scheme’s team of
local wildlife experts on the steps they are taking to:
- Manage their land
as a haven for wildlife
- Reduce their use
of energy, water and other resources
- Reduce, reuse and
recycle the waste they produce
- Support their
local communities
We have also taken the BBKA Bee Pledge. This
means that we are doing all we can to make sure our park is working to help Britain's honey bees and
other pollinators by planting forage crops, providing places for bees to live
and promoting bee conservation.
There are a number of British wildlife species which
are officially under threat, including the much loved hedgehog, species of
butterfly and many insects. There are a number
of reasons for this, including climate change, habitat loss and a reduction in
biodiversity.
Our wildlife area will continue to develop over time –
we hope it will become a favourite feature of our human and animal visitors
alike!
